Navigating Polarization: Dr. Kennedy Stewart’s Vision for a Collaborative Future

Kennedy Stewart SFU Professor of Public Policy speaking at the Whistler Institute

On March 27 former MP, Vancouver Mayor, and present-day academic, Kennedy Stewart, encouraged attendees to reflect on decision-making processes at both the individual and collective levels. He shared his experience of navigating polarizing issues and emphasized the importance of evidence-based decision-making in shaping the future of governance and policy. His engaging and thoughtful presentation was peppered with real-world examples and thought experiments designed to encourage deep thinking about democracy, science, and society’s role in addressing pressing challenges.

Following the presentation, an interactive Q&A session gave the audience an opportunity to ask questions and discuss issues ranging from housing and economic policy to climate change and social cohesion. Dr. Stewart provided insightful responses, offering solutions-driven perspectives while stressing the need for compromise and collaboration in today’s divided political climate.

Dr. Stewart concluded by emphasizing the need for productive discourse and community engagement to confront challenges such as climate change, economic inequality, and housing affordability. His insights encouraged attendees to consider how science, evidence, and open dialogue can be pivotal in making informed decisions that benefit society as a whole.

The evening wrapped up with an opportunity for attendees to network and continue the conversation at Hunter Gather, leaving with new perspectives on how to contribute to meaningful change in their communities.

This event underscored the Whistler Institute’s commitment to creating a space for open dialogue, critical thinking, and inclusive decision-making on the most pressing issues facing our communities today.
