Our third event for the 2025-2026 Global Perspectives Speaker Series explored youth and anxiety. Anxiety is increasingly part of everyday life for children and teens, shaped by social pressures, life transitions, and the constant presence of the digital world. In this talk psychologists Dr. Kimberley Da Silva and Dr. Juliana Negreiros explored how anxiety develops in young people and how parents, educators, and caregivers can recognize when typical worry becomes something more serious. Drawing on clinical experience and research, the speakers shared practical strategies for supporting youth while helping adults better understand the emotional challenges facing the next generation.
The Speakers:
What was discussed:
The spectrum of anxiety. Anxiety exists on a continuum—from normal, everyday worry to clinically significant anxiety disorders. Understanding where a young person falls on that spectrum helps determine whether reassurance, coping strategies, or professional support may be needed.
How modern life amplifies worry. Social media, academic pressure, and constant digital connection can intensify feelings of comparison, uncertainty, and fear of failure for young people. These pressures can make anxiety more visible and more persistent.
Recognizing when anxiety becomes a problem. Warning signs can include avoidance of everyday activities, significant distress, physical symptoms, or worry that interferes with school, friendships, or family life. Knowing these indicators helps adults intervene earlier and more effectively.
Evidence-based strategies for supporting youth. The speakers highlighted practical tools such as building coping skills, encouraging gradual exposure to feared situations, and fostering open conversations about emotions. These approaches can help children and teens develop resilience and confidence.
The role of families and schools. Anxiety support works best when caregivers, educators, and clinicians collaborate. Schools increasingly use structured programs and classroom strategies designed to help students understand and manage anxiety.
Helping young people build resilience. Rather than eliminating anxiety entirely, the goal is to help youth learn how to navigate uncertainty, tolerate discomfort, and build the emotional skills needed to face challenges throughout life.
Through their discussion, Dr. Da Silva and Dr. Negreiros emphasized that anxiety is both common and manageable. With awareness, supportive adults, and practical tools, young people can learn to handle worry in healthy ways and continue to grow with confidence.
